Introduction
The photographs that were used in the book
Mennonites in Indiana and Michigan, by J. C. Wenger, (1961) were
deposited into the Archives by John R. Smucker, Goshen, Indiana, in
1970 and 1974. The conference added some additional photographs
in 1988. The photographs of the 50th anniversary of Gospel
Evangel, 1919-1969, as edited by Ezra Beachy, was added by a daughter,
Bearty Eby, in 1991. The slide sets were transferred from the

Jonathan Troyer (on back is written, “Really Jonas D. Troyer”)
In The Mennonites in Indiana and Michigan by J.C. Wenger, p. 334
“Jonas D. Troyer, 1811-1897. Buried in the Miller Cemetery, northwest
of the Eight-Square schoolhouse, and strangely the tombstone reads
Jonathan Troyer, by mistake. He was commonly called “Yohn”
(German abbreviation for Jonas), and someone must have thought that
“Yohn” stood for Jonathan.”

John R. Smucker transferred a number of slide sets
and slides from the Conference Office, Goshen, Indiana, to the
Archives, on October 18, 2000. Smucker came into the Archives
looking for several older sets of slides that he produced in the 1960s
and 1970s, as Conference Historian of the Conference. I could not
locate these older items, but when I contacted the Conference Office,
Administrative Assistant Charlotte Long found these, and made
arrangements for Smucker to transfer them to the Archives.
