Introduction

These papers were deposited into the Archives by Roy H. Umble, Goshen, Indiana, in 1962 and from 1984-1996. The organization was done by J. Kevin Miller in 1988. The Civilian Public Service correspondence, 1943-46, and the Family Correspondence, was organized by Janet Reedy, a daughter, in 1995-96.

Biographical Sketch

Roy Umble was born May 11, 1913 to John S. and Alice Landis Umble. He married Ferne Smith in 1938, and after her death in 1976 he married Ethel Kambs on November 11, 1978. Roy taught speech at the University of Pittsburgh, and long time speech professor at Goshen College. He received his doctorate at Northwestern University, with a thesis on Mennonite Preachers. He also worked with the CPS in speech and was involved with the organization of the Voluntary Service program under MCC.

Civilian Public Service (CPS) Correspondence, 1943-46

The first section of this correspondence is from Roy H. Umble to his spouse, Ferne (Smith) Umble, who together with their young children, were living with her parents at Eureka, Illinois. But included with Roy Umble's letters is attached correspondence which he had received from Umble's parents, as well as letters from other persons, photographs, newsletters, etc. from Civilian Public Service camp experiences.

Umble was at CPS Camp #28, Medaryville, Indiana (March 1944) at CPS Camp #57, at Hill City, South Dakota (March-July 1944); at Camp #18, Denison, Iowa (July-November 1944); and then at Mennonite Central Committee headquarters at Akron, Pennsylvania (November-February 1944), where he served as Educational Director.

The next sections of correspondence includes those written and received by Ferne (Smith) Umble, while she was in Eureka, Illinois, 1944-46. Included here is letters to Roy, and letters from immediate family, friends and businesses. There is also correspondence to and from Roy's parents, John and Alice Umble, as well as an autobiography, some more general materials, and the dissertation written by Roy Umble.
