Administrative Information

These papers were deposited into the Archives by Ora Troyer, Fairview, Michigan, in 1990. The church bulletins, 1954-1989, and the congregational history (1990) of the Fairview Mennonite Church have been transferred to the congregational collection, III-22-7.

8. Postcard, 1927. Oscar Rhodes, France, to Ora Troyer, c/o D. J. Packer, Saginaw, Michigan. "A card I received in 1928 from Oscar Rhoads, owner of the Comins Garage, who was in France working on racing cars. He asked me to open up the garage, after the weather opens up and the automobiles were able to travel," writes Ora Troyer.

b. "To the American Voter of Comins Township...by W. F. McNeely, Chairman, American Defense Society, Oscoda County Division." 1 page. Concerning the spring l9l8 election of Comins Township officers. "A long very abusive letter, to the American Voters of Comins Township, to defeat the Mennonites at the polls. A similar notice was posted in various places throughout Comins Township. They were torn down by the Mennonites," writes Ora Troyer.

c. Two letters from Herman Dehnke, Prosecuting Attorney, Alcona County, Harrisville, Michigan, to Hon. Alex. J. Groesbeck, Attorney-General, Lansing, Michigan, dated April 22 and April 24, 1920, 3 pages and 1 page respectively. Concerning the move to oust Judge Widdis from office.

d. Article on grand jury held April 14 & 15, 1920, concerning burning of Fairview church. "Judge it Yourself," The Grand Rapids News (October 1, 1920). 2 pages. "Judge Widdis gives a good account of what took place in regards to the Grand Jury investigation," writes Ora Troyer.

"A 24" x 24" map of Oscoda County, prepared about 1940 or earlier by the Huron National Forest, with the old logging railroad grades. At the time, it was relatively easy to locate them; today it is rather difficult," writes Ora Troyer.

Information on map includes: "Oscoda County [prepared by] Sportsman's County Map Service, 15339 Greenlawn, Detroit 21, Michigan. Phone University 2-0169". No date.

29. Michigan Mennonite Bible School [M.M.B.S.], Fairview, Michigan, 1946-1966..

Ora Troyer writes: "This Bible School was hosted by the Fairview Mennonite Church, Fairview, Michigan. Highest enrollment, including instructors was 171 in 1952. In the first years only the noon meal was served in the Church building. Later the evening meal was also served at the Church building. The students and instructors lodged in the homes of the church members. The Bible School played a very important part not only in the life of the Mennonite churches in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, who were well represented, but churches throughout the United States as well. Few things made the impact on the churches involved as the School did. There were two reasons why the School could no longer operate. More of our young people were attending college, and serving in V.S. The Conservative Mennonites formed a Bible School in Irvin, Ohio, which still exists."

At this point he left the Fairview Mennonite Church, taking the ledger with him. At the time the Comins Mennonite Church was formed he started recordings of the Comins Mennonite Church in Ledger I. I copied it as far as it pretained to the Fairview Mennonite Church. The original is now preserved in the Mennonite Historical Archives, at Bluffton, Ohio."
