Biographical
Sketch
Son of
C. P & Barbara Thut Steiner, and brother of M.S. Steiner, A.J., was
a long time bishop in the Easter District of Ohio Mennonite Conference,
and a member of the Executive Committee of the Conference. He was also
on the Mennonite Board of Education's Executive Committee in the early
1920's and on the proposed Seminary Committee, 1919-1921. He was
married to Martha Whitmer. They had three sons, David, James and John,
)all three ministers and bishops). Later he married Mary Metzler.
Biographical
Sketch, Martha Witmer Steiner, 1878-1928
The
first wife of A. J. Steiner was Martha (Whitmer) Steiner, 1878-1928.
She was the daughter of David L. and Anna (Otto) Whitmer, and taught
three different schools in Mahoning County, Ohio, beginning in 1895:
Pine HIll, Webster Hall, and East Lewistown, all located near North
Lima, Ohio.
At a Sunday School conference, she met Albert Steiner whom she married
in 1903. They established a Christian home, which has been described as
follows:
...family worship was a vital, regular practice each morning and often
in the evening also. At times they first spent time memorizing
scripture as part of their worship. It was a home where the boys were
expected to work, and to be
obedient to their parents.
Martha Whitmer Steiner served as secretary of the Women's Missionary
Society from 1926-1928. Source: Mennonite Women, by Elaine Sommers
