Notes on Chapters 1-7 (5 1/2" x 8 12/")
Colfax (1843 - ) was from South
Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, and as a Whig (later Republican), was
elected to Congress in 1854 and served at least until 1868. In 1850
when the Constitution of Indiana was adopted, he opposed the clause
"prohibiting free colored men from setting in the State." (Indianapolis
Journal April 1, 1868)
