Biographical Sketch

Son of Lewis H. and Mary Wenger Shank. He was the first (Old) Mennonite missionary to go to South America. He remained in South America from 1917-1950. During this time, his first wife, Emma Hershey, died (1939). He later remarried Selena Gamber, who was also working in South America.

Upon their return from South America, J. W. Shank taught at Eastern Mennonite College. Then they helped at the Mennonite Hospital in La Junta, Colorado. They later retired at Showalter Villa, Hesston, Kansas.
