Biographical Sketch
John H. Oberholtzer was a Mennonite
minister and one of the founders of the General Conference Mennonite
Church.
1809 Born near Clayton, Pennsylvania
on January 10 to Abraham and Susanna Oberholtzer
1825 Taught in local schools; later he became a locksmith
1842 Ordained as a minister at the Swamp Mennonite Church
1847 Organized the General Conference Mennonite Church, with other
ministers, in the division in October of 1847, withdrawing from the
Franconia Conference
1848 Became chairman of the Eastern District Conference of the General
Conference Mennonite Church
1852 Began editing and printing Religiöser Botschafter
1857 Organized a Sunday school at West Swamp congregation
1860 Assisted in founding the General Conference Mennonite Church in
Iowa
1872 Resigned as chairman of the Eastern District Conference; continued
preaching
1895 Died on February 15
