This collection     was processed, organized and listed by Sharon Klingelsmith on April 17, 1975.  Additions were made to the listing February 17, 1981, and by Bryan L. Kehr on July 13, 1983.  The Jacob Nold correspondence was listed individually some time during the 1990s.  Additional research on the frakturs was done by Joe Springer on May 23, 2002.  The inventory was typed into the computer by Nelda Nussbaum on February 12, 2004, with Dennis Stoesz as supervisor.

A German poem, written in Gothic script is included on this fractur, which appears in the top five hearts of the fraktur.  This poem has five quatrains of rhyming in a regular 8.8.7.7. meter. Here is a rough (unrhymed/unmetrical) translation of the poem.

I want to honor my promise
not to break this covenant with God
No, upon my holy baptism
I will ground my life’s path.

I want to honor my promise
not to break this covenant with God
No, upon my holy baptism
I will ground my life's path.

Lord Jesus, I, your poor child,
full of faults and full of sin,
lay myself at your feet
and let the tears flow.

Ach, I regret the misdeed
that enraged you O Lord.
Lord Jesus, let yourself be found
Forgive me my sins.

I lie before you and ask you
my beloved God, ach, let me
act according to my promise
to walk in your way Lord Jesus

Oh, God who art bound three in one,
let neither life nor death
separate me from you Lord.
Accept me into your joy.

Anna Lehman, b. Lancaster Co., Pa., 24 April 1791  d. Franklin Co., Pa., 22 April 1859.
Daughter of Johannes Lehman (1763-1833) and Maria _____ (1759-1841) who moved to Franklin Co. in 1796.
Anna never married.  Johannes Stauffer is probably Bishop Johannes Stauffer (1746-1836) of Washington Co., Md.
The Fraktur artist appears to have been Joseph Lochbaum (1776-1856), known as the Nine Hearts Artist or Cumberland Valley artist.  Lochbaum, at one time schoolmaster at Solomon's       Church school in Franklin Co., is not known to have been Mennonite.  Several other artists may have imitated his work and his style appears in various later Fraktur pieces done in Ontario.  He used the same text on many Fraktur.

[Written in the lower three hearts of the fraktur are the following words, again written in the German language and in Gothic script]

    Barbara Lehman
    was born in the year
    1797 on May 16th,
    in the sign [of]

    Aquarias
    [In crude Latin:]
    O Man, you are dust,
    to dust you will return.

    To God Alone be Glory.

Note on the reference to “Aquarias” on the fraktur: Our daily newspapers show horoscopes in monthly divisions based on the sun’s position in the sky.  In this case “Acquarias” refers to the lunar position in the sky at Barbara'’ birth.  Agricultural almanacs showed the zodical position of the moon for each day of the year.  Rural people relied heavily on these lunar signs for a variety of purposes such as figuring out when to plant crops, a practice not devoid of scientific merit.  Folk wisdom of the time believed that the lunar position at birth gave insight into an individual’s personality traits. Well into the 19th century, birth records in family Bibles routinely indicate the lunar sign along with the birth date, in some cases even in lieu of the birth date.
