Nellie (Miller) Mann: relief worker (Syria, 1921-23; Belgium, 1947-48), I-W host (Indianapolis, Indiana), homemaker

The papers focus on C. Mann’s correspondence and organizational material collected as pastor for various Mennonite churches, ca. 1939-74; his sermons preached as pastor of First Mennonite Church (Indianapolis, Indiana) and as interim pastor, conference minister (Pacific Coast Conference), ca. 1954-74; N. (Miller) Mann’s diary excerpts from Syria relief work, ca. 1921-23; and her diaries from I-W hosting in Indianapolis, Indiana, ca. 1958-1964.

        (Wade) Miller
1900    Cleo Aaron Mann born May 11, in Elkhart, Indiana to Tobias and Saloma
        (Eckhart) Mann
1910s    Nellie acted as Sunday School Superintendent at Prairie Street Mennonite Church
1916    Nellie graduated from high school
1918    Nellie enrolled at Goshen College and attended until 1921
1921    Nellie called to relief work in Syria until 1923
1924    Marriage of Cleo Mann and Nellie Miller, August 25, Elkhart, Indiana
1936    Foundation of Pleasant View Mennonite Church, Goshen, Indiana.  Cleo ordained
        deacon in 1949.  Nellie taught Sunday School, Bible School, and was active in the                               Indiana-Michigan  W.M.S.C.
1945    Cleo commissioned by the Mennonite Relief and Service Committee to do relief
         work in Belgium; Nellie and son David join him in 1947, and they return to
         the U.S. in 1948
1953    Cleo and Nellie asked to host medical students and I-W men in Indianapolis; Cleo
         ordained to the ministry in 1956
1966    Cleo retired and proceeded to serve as interim pastor at several congregations
         through the 1970s: Eugene (Ore.) Mennonite Church, Nampa (Idaho)
         Mennonite Church, and Portland (Ore.) Mennonite Church
1970    Cleo served as Pacific Coast Conference Minister
1971    Cleo and Nellie retired to Elkhart

1978    Cleo died, January 13, in Indiana
1980    Nellie married Samuel Witmer; he died on February 2, 1990
1997    Nellie died, February 2, in Goshen, Indiana

Administrative Information

The Cleo Mann papers were deposited into the archives by Nellie Mann, Elkhart, Indiana, in 1978.  An additional 1955 letter by Nellie Mann on the beginnings of the Indianapolis church was given to the archives by daughter Dorothy (Mann) Horst, Tiskilwa, Illinois, in 1991.  A presentation about Nellie Mann’s relief work in Syria was deposited into the archives by David Mann, Phoenix, AZ, in 2000.  Cleo Mann’s papers on relief work in Belgium, several books, Nellie Mann’s diaries and Guestbooks, and an early history of Pleasant View Mennonite Church were delivered to the archives by Dorothy and Alton Horst, Tiskilwa, Illinois, in 2003. 

Cleo Mann collection processed by Ann Weber Becker, Kevin Enns-Rempel, Bryan Kehr, J. Kevin Miller, David Reimer, and Marilyn Voran in March 1984.  Inventory typed into the computer and posted on the web by Monica Zimmerman in June 2001.  Box and file numbers added to collection by Nelda Nussbaum in April 2003.  Nellie (Miller) Mann collection organized and listed by Rebecca Allen, Goshen college student, in October 2003.
