Introduction

These papers were deposited into the Archives by J. J. Hostetler, Goshen, Indiana, in 1972, 1984, 1990, and from 1994-2000.

Biographical Sketch

1905 Born May 7, 1905, near LaGrange, Indiana, son of Noah J. and Lizzie (Eash) Hostetler.

1923 Graduated from Middlebury High School, Indiana;

1923-25 Public School Teacher, Johnson Co., Iowa
Had Normal Training at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

1926-31 Bookkeeper, Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., Chicago Attended the Y.M.C.A. College in Chicago; and spent four years at Moody Bible Institute, in Evening School, Chicago, Illinois; and had a Correspondence Course in accounting, Chicago University of Commerce.

1929 Married Gladys Barbara Bontrager, Kalona, Iowa.
Parents of four sons.

1931-38 Treasurer and Bookkeeper, Elkhart Paint and Wall Paper Co.

1938- Superintendent and Pastor, Canton City Mission, Canton, Ohio
Other pastorates included churches at Cullom, Illinois; and Peroria, Illinois.

1938- Winter Bible Schools. Hostetler helped coordinate the various bible schools, Johnstown, Ontario, Fairview Michigan, Hesston, and Goshen. They were six weeks in length, although Ontario was twelve weeks.

1941-72 Served with Mennonite Commission for Christian Education.
Secretary of Sunday Schools, 1941-71. Field Secretary, 1959-60

1950's Hostetler also was involved in the very beginning of Camp Amigo, and the larger Mennonite Camping Association.

1967-72 Served as secretary of stewardship and Christian education in Scottdale, Pennsylvania. For three years he was field-worker and overseer for the Allegheny
Mennonite Conference.

1972 Involved with Mennonite Business Associates, 1972-76

1988 Matthew Explained (1988) and Revelation Explained (1992) by Hostetler

1990's Papa was an Entrepreneur: Biography of Noah J. Hostetler, 1872-1933, and his family, by J. J. Hostetler

1/4 Hochstetler, Jacob S., 1704-76 (1982)
Includes story, as told by J. J. Hostetler at a Hochstetler reunion in 1982, of immigrant Jacob Hochstetler who came to America in 1736 and settled in the Amish community north of Lancaster, PA , by the North Kil River in what is known today as Berks County. Story includes the 1757 Indian attack on settlers in this Amish community.
File includes artistic drawing of immigrant Hochstetler pioneer home, 1757, as drawn by Ivan Moon, 1982. The 1982 tape recording of this story is found in Hist. MSS. 6-197.
