Introduction

These papers were deposited into the Archives by Mary Ann (Hostetler) Melchert, a daughter, from Oakland, California, in 1997. The folder of Hostetler's History of the Mennonite Church in Ghana, 1957-1964, was deposited into the Archives by Merlin Becker-Hoover of the Mennonite Board of Missions in 1980. The 1956 "Welcome Address Given By the Ghana Mennonite Mission" to Rev. John H. Moseman, etc. was deposited into the Archives by Wilbert Shenk in 1981.

Note that two green boxes of reel-to-reel tape recordings from Accra, Ghana, and dated from around 1955-56, are found under Hist. Mss. 6-191, S. Jay Hostetler Tape Collection. Includes a partial listing.



Inventory Listing

Box 1 (Large)

Includes sermons, papers, booklets, slides and tape recordings reflecting their work as missionaries in Ghana, 1957-1972. Includes history of Mennonites in Ghana, 1957-72, including research notes recorded on 3x5 cards. And includes some materials on Nigeria as well as slides of Nigeria, broader Africa, the Middle East and Switzerland.

Box 2 (Large)

Includes field records of work in Ghana, 1958-64, including a few materials from 1965-74. Most of materials is correspondence, but also include articles. Also materials on work in Nigeria, 1958-60, and Africa in general. Other papers include going to Bihar, India, 1928, 1937, photographs of Little Eden Camp, 1954; Belmont Mennonite, Indiana, 1955; clippings on Camp Amigo; and correspondence with Mission Board through to 1976.

Sermon notes, 1927-1956
Seven booklets of sermon notes, 1927-1956, which Hostetler preached in United States of America and India. Sermons include the place he preached the sermon, the date, and a sequential number of the sermon given in his lifetime. Also includes three additional booklets on Ga Grammar, and on teaching.
