Biographical Sketch

Hartzler was a Mennonite educator, minister, editor, author. He lived in Elkhart, Indiana

1857 Born on August 8, to Samuel and Sarah Smoker Hartzler, Topeka, Indiana
1874 Baptized near Ligonier, Indiana; joined Maple Grove Mennonite Church
1875 Taught in Lagrange County grade schools for 10 years; also farmed
1880 Married Fannie C. Stutzman on February 5; settled near Topeka, Indiana
1881 Ordained on April 18; son Vernon born on October 24
1888-1900 Served as Secretary of the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference
1895 Moved to Elkhart, Indiana on October 25; taught at the Elkhart Institute; served as director of the Mennonite Board of Education until 1917
1903 Moved to Goshen, Indiana; taught at Goshen College; served as pastor of the Goshen College Church,
1905 Co-authored Mennonite Church History with Daniel Kauffman
1910 Traveled to India on a one year Missions study trip
1911 Wrote Among Missions in the Orient with J. S. Shoemaker
1914 Left Goshen College, worked in 2 factories until the beginning of WWI
1917 Worked to assist conscientious objectors during WWI
1921 Wrote Mennonites in the World War or Nonresistance Under Test
1923 Moved to Elkhart; became pastor at Prairie Street Mennonite Church
1929 Wife Fannie died on June 29
1930 Married Catherine Bauers on July 14; both were 72 years old
1940 Retired as Pastor of Prairie Street Mennonite Church
1951 Moved to the Home for the Aged at Rittman, Ohio on November 10
1953 Died on April 1 at age 95
