D1.  Christian King Family Documents, 1807-1943

These papers reflect six generations of documents.  It starts with Christian King (1761-1838) who lived in Pennsylvania and owned land in Ontario, Canada, in 1807.  He was ordained a minister in the Amish Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  He was also the son of Samuel Koenig, who immigrated to the USA in 1744.

It is unknown if Christian King or his children ever lived in Ontario, Canada.  A similar question has been posed by David Luthy concerning the Stoltzfus Family.  Christian Stoltzfus purchased Lot #10, 18 and 30 in the Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, while Christian King purchased Lots #58 and #128.  See Luthy’s article entitled “Did Christian Stoltzfus’ Children Live in Canada,” Family Life (June 1992).

From the documents, we know the King family story moves from Pennsylvania to Fairfield County, Ohio, and then to West Liberty, Ohio.  It ends at Belleville, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, where John M. and Anna Mary (King) Hartzler and their family settled in 1916.  This is where their son, H. Harold Hartzler grew up.

Documentation on these names comes from Hugh Gingerich and Rachel Kreider's Amish and Amish Mennonite Genealogies (Pequea Publishers, 1986).  Further documentation can be found in the King Family History, 2 Volumes, written by H. Harold Hartzler, 1984.

8/1       Introduction and Background to King Families

8/2       Map, Woolwich Township, Ontario, 1807 (Christian King) (Oversize Folder).  Hand drawn original map, received by Christian King (1761-1838), probably since he owned some of the plots of land.  The map shows 129 plots of present day Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, with names of Eby, Wenger, Stoltzfus, King, Martin, etc. on it, - no date (ca. 1807).  Similar map has been reproduced in A Brief History of the Mennonites in Ontario, by L. J. Burkholder, 1935, page 42.  It is entitled “The Map of Woolwich Township” - this was part of the Germany Company Tract of Woolwich, which included 86,078 acres of land and which was originally conveyed to William Wallace by the Canadian government in 1798.

8/3       Deeds of Sale,#58 and #128, 1808.  i) Deed of Sale (Indenture), for Lots #58 and #128, Ontario, 1808 (Oversize Folder), and ii) Deed of Sale (Indenture) for lots #58 & #128 in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ontario (then Upper Canada) from Augustus Jones, John Erb & Jacob Erb to Christian King (1761-1838) - 29 March 1808.

8/4       Map, Woolwich Township, Ontario, 1807 (Eby Family, Lancaster).  Photocopy of handrawn map which came from an Eby Family, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and which was published in A Brief History of the Mennonites in Ontario, by L. J. Burkholder, 1935, page 42.  The original map seems to be lost.

8/5       Map, Woolwich Township, Ontario, 1807 (Abraham Reist).  Hand drawn original map, received by Abraham Reist, who purchased lots #34, 52 and 84.  This original map was purchased by David Luthy 1992 for the Heritage Historical Library, Alymer, Ontario.  The location of the plots on the east side of the map are considerably different than on the Christian King and Eby Family original maps.  Further research needs to be done on these discrepancies. See Luthy’s article on this map, entitled “Did Christian Stoltzfus’ Children Live in Canada,” Family Life (June 1992).

8/6       Map, Woolwich Township, Ontario, 1808 (Oversize, Tube).  .  Photocopy of another original map of Woolwich Township, dated January 29, 1808, and signed by Augustus Jones.  Original is with Ministry of Natural Resources, Peterborough, Ontario.  The plots on the east side of the map is similar to the Abraham Reist original handdrawn map.

8/7       Map, Research on this 1807 Map, by Dennis Stoesz, 1998.  Contains correspondence with Reg Good, Sam Steiner, David Luthy,Allan Day, and Charmaine Sommerfeldt, all of Ontario, Canada, concerning the whereabouts of the Eby Family original handdrawn map (as it appeared in Burkholder’s book).  Also concerning the existence of other originals of this 1807 handdrawn map of Woolwich Township, Ontario.

8/8       Trip Book, 1829.  Diary of a trip by David Zug [David Zook] in 1829 to upper New York, United States, and Waterloo, Canada.  Author of diary as "David Zook" identified and verified by Joseph Stoll [2000].  Cover of diary includes two names "Tage Buch einer reise David Zug [David Zook] und Christian Kinig [Christian King], im Jahr 1829."

8/9       Will, Christian King, 1836.  Includes two items.  i) Will of Christian King, (1761-1838) (KG7) - Fairfield Co, Ohio - 1836. ii)         Sale Bill of 700 acres of Land - Waterloo - 1839, Christian King KG7 (1761-1838)

D2. Jacob King Family Documents, 1850-1896

            Papers, 1850-1896

Jacob King (1758-1822) was a brother to Christian King (1761-1838) and also a son of the 1744 immigrant Samuel Koenig.  There are fewer older documents from this side of the family.  This side reaches back to Jacob Z. King (1851-1922), West Liberty, Ohio, who was H. Harold Hartzler’s grandfather on his mother's side from West Liberty, Ohio.
