Biographical Sketch
Eli S. Hallman (1866-1955) was a
Mennonite minister and bishop. He established mission churches in
Saskatchewan, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas.
1866 Eli Hallman was born on
February 26, near Washington, Waterloo, Co., Ontario to Abraham and
Mary Schmitt Hallman
1873 Melinda Clemens was born on May 18 to George and Salome Clemens in
Breslau, Ontario
1893 Melinda and Eli married on August 9; together they had seven
children
1897 Eli was ordained as a Mennonite minister on June 17 at the First
Mennonite Church in Kitchener, Ontario
1905 Eli assisted in beginning the Sharon Mennonite Church in Guernsey,
Sasakatchewan
1907 Eli was ordained as bishop for the Alberta-Saskatchewan Conference
1912 They moved to Goshen, Indiana; Eli became financial field
secretary at Goshen College
1916-18 They lived in Grand Bay, Alabama; worked with a new congregation
1918-20 They lived in Allemands, Louisiana; worked with a new
congregation
1920-28 Returned to Guernsey, Ontario, Eli served as a pastor
1928-32 They moved to Texas; Eli served as pastor in Falfurrias, Texas
1932-51 Eli served as pastor in Tuleta, Texas
1951 Eli retired, they moved to Akron, Pennsylvania; joined the
Monterey Mennonite Church
1955 Eli died on August 25
1956 Melinda moved to Galt, Ontario; she died of a heart attack on
February 12
