Biographical Sketch

 Anabaptist historian with special interest in Austrian Anabaptism, including the Hutterian Brethren.  History of Ideas scholar and trained philosopher.  Of liberal Jewish parentage in Vienna, Austria.

Served in the Austro-Hungarian army, 1914-1918, after which he gradually took on Christian convictions, including pacifism.  Teacher in Vienna Hochschulen, 1919-1939.  Received his Dr. Phil. at the University of Vienna, 1924. Collected, transcribed, and interpreted many Anabaptist and Hutterian documents.  Emigrated to the United States in 1939 under Nazi pressure. Processed and catalogued much of the Mennonite Historical  Library in Goshen, 1941-1945.  Published regularly in the Mennonite Quarterly Review and became an associate editor. Professor of history and philosophy at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, 1945-1960. Member of the Eight Street Mennonite Church in Goshen.  Helped found a Quaker Meeting in Kalamazoo. Published Mennonite Piety Through the Centuries; Hutterite Studies; The Theology of Anabaptism; et al., as well as numerous articles.
