Biographical Sketch

    Henry Egly was a bishop of the Defenseless Mennonite Church in Adams County, Indiana.  Elected deacon in 1850, minister in 1854, and bishop in 1858.

        “Diary of Bishop Henry Egly, 1888-1889” (photocopy) (Typescript, English language)  69 pages  (There is a title page, and on the second page the following explanation is given” “This Diary of 1888-1889 by Bishop Henry Egly, Written in German hand writing by Bishop Egly and translated into English hand script by Mrs. Chris P. Steury in 1965 and typed  in the same year by a grand-daughter Amanda M. Egly, Hirschy, Sprunger, from Mrs. Steury’s translation for the Memorial Library.  The original Copy has been given to the Church he served and of which he was Founder.  Amanda’s birth is recorded on June 22 – 1889 and she was born in the home of her grandfather Bishop Henry Egly.  [Additions added in handwritten form – “August 2, 1965.  Mrs. Ben (Amanda) Sprunger, Berne, Indiana”]
