Biographical Sketch

John Durr was a Mennonite minister and bishop mostly in the Martinsburg congregation. He was the youngest person to be ordained to each of these two posts at the ages of 18 and 20 respectively. He was the first moderator of the Southwest Pennsylvania Mennonite Conference, 1876-1898, as well as the General Conference Committee and Preliminary General Conference in 1896-1897. He served on the Southwest Pa. Conference committees of Bible Conference, missions, and Sunday School Conference. Also he served as vice- president of the district conference mission board.

He was married three times--first to Malissa Jane Steele, then to Mary Susan Caufman, and finally to Sarah B. Gsell Leidig. He had six daughters, Annie, Sara Elizabeth, Mary, Hannah, Katie, and Laura,--all by his first wife, Malissa. An infant son by his second wife died in infancy. Clarence J. Ramer and Ellrose Zook would be grandsons of him.
