Administrative Information

The Longanecker Family History materials were deposited into the Archives by Hazel Hassan, Goshen, Indiana, in 1993. The other Deter family papers were deposited by Hassan in 2002. Eunice Deter was an aunt to Hazel (Nice) Hassan.

Deter's research on the Steiner family has been deposited at the Mennonite Library and Archives at Bluffton College. One should also note the Christian B. Steiner (1825-1903) papers which are housed at the Archives here in Goshen, Indiana, deposited by Eunice Deter in the early 1960s.

These papers consist of research materials from the books published by Eunice Deter (and Rachel Nice and Jean Longanecker Jennings) on the Longanecker Family History (1937, 1946, and 1969 editions). Materials from the following persons are included in the collection:

1. Tintypes: Andrew Deter (1809-1889), Franklin Co., Pa. Father of Daniel H. Deter of Morrison, Illinois. -- Elsie Steiner (1859-1938), at age 18 in 1877. Later married Daniel H. Deter (1852-1943).

2. Franklin Co., Pa. papers. -- Map (1 p.) with two dots showing location of Andrew Deter's land and that of Joe Benedict, b. 1915, a great-nephew of Andrew Deter and the grandson of Andrew's sister, Susan Deter Benedict.
    New Guilford Brethren in Christ church's ground-breaking in 1950. The old church is     said to have been the one where Daniel Deter's mother, Elizabeth Hoover Deter,         was a member.

3. a) Photocopy of marriage license of Daniel Deter and Elsie Steiner. Married 16 Dec 1879 by Jacob Garwick, Brethren in Christ minister, at the Adam Steiner residence, home of the bride's parents. b) Picture pages of Deters from a family history. c) Also a list "From Grandfather's book, March 1880: Elcy Steiner, the Elder daughter of Adam and Fianna Steiner got from home

4. Financial record books of Daniel H. Deter:

a) 1873-1879.  A small (3" x 4-3/4") leather-covered record book in which he has written:
    year 1873
1873 left the town of alliance stark Co Ohio the 17th of January and went to Wooster Summit and stay till the 27th of Jan.  then went as far as Cresline stayed all night the 28th day got to Fort Wain stayed all night the 29th day went to Aurburn ind with my aunt and stayed till the 11th day of March and then left their and went to Morrison Ill arived the 12th of March and on the 18th of March began work [for Adam Steiner] at $20 per month and for eight months wich is as follows:
March        $ 9.13 -13/100
April $20.00; May $20.00; June $20.00; August $20.00; September $20.00; October $20.00; November $10.86 -2/13; hole amount $160.00

b)  1877-1882, and 1919.  First part of the book is Daniel H. Deter's 1864 copybook, at age 12, from school days at "Opossum Hill School," Franklin Co., Pa.

c)   Large financial records book, for years 1901-1926.

d)  "D Ledger" -- 1920-1926.  Contents: Sale record of Mrs. Adam Steiner's goods, 1920 [Elsie Deter's mother]. -- Repairs on Steiner house in Morrison. -- Estate of Amanda Small [sister of D. H. Deter]. -- Financial dealings with son, Daniel S. Deter, 1919 - Sep 1, 1920. -- Papering/painting costs at Steiner house, 1920. --Redecorating the Mennonite church at Morrison, May 9 - June 6, 1925. -- Financial dealings with son Ezra Deter, Dec. 26, 1918 - Jan. 1, 1921. -- Elsie S. Deter's deposit at State Ba nk, Mar. 1922. --Son Andrew Deter's note, Mar. 1, 1922. --Bags of cement used, no year. -- Elsie Deter's 1926 deposit.

 5. a) The original 1884 deacon lot slip of D. H. Deter, and b) Page from Jan. 8, 1942 Gospel Herald showing the name of Daniel Deter in a list of "Mennonite Deacons Who Have Served More than 50 Years."

 6. Warranty land deeds (copies): Grantee deed, Carroll Co., Iowa, 2 Mar 1892 - Grantor deed, Iowa, 29 May 1901. -- Grantee deed (177½ acres), Whiteside Co., Ill., 1 Mar 1902.

 7. Carroll Co., Iowa farm directory 1957, where Deters lived from 1892 to 1902.

 8. Various papers: C&NW Railway Co., freight bill for oats shipped 22 Apr 1896 to Ralston, Iowa; received 25 Apr 1896; charge $79.00. -- Bill for $180.48 dated 28 May 1898, from Gressler Bros., Scranton, Iowa.  Providers of grain, lumber, coal. --John F. Lalla & Co., Chicago, Ill., memo of check enclosed for 4.27 for "1 rub butter." --Gougle Bros., Chicago, 21 Jan 1899 (but stamped Mar 3, 1899), "1 Tub," 4.16 minus freight (60) and cartage (21) for Net proceeds, 3.35.

 9. The original 1920 sale bill (and a copy) for the farm sold in Illinois.

10.  Copt of a handwritten list of birth and death family records, by Elsie or Daniel Deter. -- Copy of a page from an otherwise blank records book, showing account paid on trip to visit Deter children, Andrew at Tintah, Minnesota, and John at Unity, Saskatchewan, Canada.

11.  Elsie Deter: --List of the quilts she pieced. --Letter from a lawyer to D.H. Deter asking him to inform him if a draft enclosed is acceptable; in it, D.H. will forfeit his inheritance from his wife in order to give it to their children.  --Memorial funeral book for Elsie Deter. --Page with several of Elsie's obituaries.

12.  Last days of D.H. Deter, Nov. 8-22, 1943, as described and written by daughter, Eunice Deter.

13.  Funeral service for D.H. Deter, recorded and typed by daughter-in-law, Edith Huffnagle Deter. -- Newspaper obituary.

15.  Obituaries of Michael H. Deter (1857-1949) and his wife, Emma.  Michael was the brother of D.H. Deter and was a Reformed Mennonite minister at Sterling, Ill.  --Will of Michael Deter. -- Inventory of estate after Emma's death; heirs of Michael's deceased sisters, Anna Wingert (1841-1908), Maria Wingert (1843-1915); nieces Anna Deckert (1868-1927); Amanda Seilhamer (1870-1912), and Susan Winger (1873-1935); heirs of Jesse Benedict (1905-1947); deceased grandson of Michael's sister, Susan Deter Benedict (1855-1944).  List of heirs and addresses.

16.  Eunice Deter's autobiography, written ca. 1965 (see p.13 of autobiography).

17.  Copies of Eunice's letters, 1911-1918, and four of the actual letters. -- Her nurse's graduation invitation to Englewood Hospital, Chicago. -- Letter of 1922 with return address on envelope of J.S. Shoemaker, Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities.  In this letter, Shoemaker invites Eunice to consider working as a nurse at the Eureka, Illinois Home for the Aged.

18.  Two Eunice Deter diaries: Jan. 1908 - Dec. 1909; Jan. - Dec. 1910. -- Photo on board (photo 16 x 21 cm.) of Eunice, a patient, and RN Anna Dahlgren; dated 1918.
