Diary, 1880-1891

204 pages, typescript, photocopy. Burkholder has entries of two-four lines per day in her diary, and includes a description of the weather, church activities, deaths, chores, social activites, school, and also mentions the election of President Garfield, 1881. Diary was started when Burkholder was about 15 years old and includes entries up to age 26. The date of her birth, May 27, 1865, and that she lived at least until June 11, 1951, is arrived at from her entry on the last page.

Susannah Burkholder lived near East Lewistown and North Lima, Ohio, and was part of this Mennonite settlement in the Mahoning and Columbiana counties. She mentions attending the Metzler's Church, today known as the North Lima Mennonite Church; mentions the Oberholtzer's church, today known as Midway Mennonite; and mentions the Nold Mennonite Church, today known as the Leetonia Mennonite Church.

File also includes two letters from Ellen (Burkholder) Maust, Louisville, Stark County, Ohio, 1967-68. Ellen and Susannah were quite likely sisters. And file includes a photocopy of a photograph of Susannah and Ellen (Ella), with their parrot Polly, as well.
