Biographical
Sketch
John D. Brunk (1872-1926) was a Mennonite
musician, composer, and head of the music department at Goshen College.
1872 Born on March 13 near Harrisonburg,
Virginia to Samuel and Susanna Brunk
1888 Joined the Weaver Mennonite Church
1897 Married Mary Kate Martin; they had eight children together; taught
music at West Central Academy in Mt. Clinton, Virginia
1900 Taught music at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia
1902 Edited the first edition of the Church and Sunday School Hymnal
1906 Became director of the School of Music at Goshen College
1912 Authored Educational Vocal Studies, an elementary music method book
1913 Moved to Harrisonburg; mother and brother-in-law died
1914 Resigned from Goshen, worked for the Mennonite Church visiting
congregations and instructing congregations in hymn singing
1915 Edited Life Songs
1916 Established a studio in Elkhart, Indiana
1918 Moved to a farm north of Goshen, Indiana
1924 Appointed chairman of the Tunes committee for a new Church Hymnal
1925 Appointed head of the Goshen College Music department
1926 Died in Elkhart on February 5 at age 53
