Christian Brandt, 1782-1866
Copy Book, 1852
1 Box (Gray)

Biographical Sketch

Christian Brandt was an Amish man who came to Wayne County, Ohio, in 1818 from Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He served the Wooster (later called Oak Grove) [Amish] Church at Smithville as a minister for many years, from about 1818-1863. See Mennonites of the Ohio and Eastern Conference, by Grant Stoltzfus, page 74. And see Tradition and Transition, by Paton Yoder, pages 131 and 142.

Administrative Information

This January 8, 1852 Copy Book came to the Archives, courtesy of Margaret Baker, Orrville, Ohio, in 1994. Baker is a descendant of Brandt. Another one of Brandt's Copy Books, which Brandt completed between 1843-1853 and which is similar but not the same as the 1852 Copy Book mentioned above, is housed at the Mennonite Historical Library, Goshen College.

The Archives also holds a letter written by Christian Brandt to Christian Graber, dated November 13, 1855. It is housed in the Samuel Mast Collection. This letter was published in English in the Mennonite Historical Bulletin, July 1965, page 6.

The contents of the Copy Book were identified by Paton Yoder, Goshen, Indiana, and by Leonard Gross, Archives, Goshen, Indiana. Updated by Dennis Stoesz August 2, 1999 and March 14, 2002.
