G.L. (George
Lewis) (1867-1921) and Elsie (Kolb) Bender (1875-1949)
Collection
Papers, 1886-1973
19 Boxes (18 Green, 1 Large)

Scope
and Content
G. L. Bender was a teacher, postmaster, first
treasurer of Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, and deacon at
Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart.
Elsie Kolb Bender was a homemaker and mother of
seven children, who supported George in his work, and who kept an
active interest in family and in the Prairie Street and College
Mennonite churches of Elkhart and Goshen where she was a member.
The bulk of this collection reflects G.L. Bender’s
personal and business relations and his final illness, and Elsie’s
relationships with her seven children, particularly Florence, her
sister Lucinda Kolb, and her friend and former neighbor Anna
Brubaker. The majority of letters are personal correspondence
between the different family members and friends. These discuss daily
life, education, career changes, and marriage.
There are three categories including correspondence,
miscellaneous, and the third addition from Mary Bender. G.L.
Bender’s Correspondence is organized by year. The children’s
correspondence is mostly to their mother organized by year, with
undated materials and ephemera at the back. However, Harold’s
correspondence is mostly letters he received. Florence’s
correspondence is unique in that it is organized in two parts: letters
to her mother, and then letters Florence received from different family
members and friends. Elsie’s correspondence is mostly between
herself and her sister Lucinda Kolb with different cards at the end.
The Miscellaneous series contains news clippings,
wedding and funeral programs, financial papers, church papers, school
papers, and D.H. Bender’s autobiography.
The Mary Bender addition includes correspondence of
Elsie, Florence and Harold, as well as three folders of ephemera
belonging to family reunions, Florence, and Wilbur. Florence’s
1923 correspondence with J.S. Hartzler describes her role in the plain
dress controversy in Ohio.

Correspondence to
and from G.L. Bender, 1886-1921
Most of George L. Bender’s correspondence is between himself and his
brother D. H. and business associates. In 1919 he began keeping a
carbon copy of the letters he sent to people as well as the letters he
received. The correspondence centers on the late 19th century and
the last few years of his life. Much of the latter correspondence
is to different medical establishments. Another part of his
correspondence was with an A. Mary Kimes in Pennsylvania regarding the
estate of a Ms. Crater.
