European Background of the Ohio Mennonites and Amish / 35

Erlenbach in Switzerland, Native Village

of Jakob Ammann, Founder of the Amish

Close to the Stockhorn, a famous mountain in the Swiss Alps, lies the beautiful village of Erlenbach in the Simmerthal of the Canton of Bern. In this commune Jakob Ammann was horn and apparently spent his early years. Ammann is still a familiar name in this part of Switzerland, though no Amish are there today. The Reformed Church building dates from the high middle ages and no major change has been made on it since the thirteenth century.

The pastor in 1967 was Ernst von Kanel.   From Swiss Tourist Office.
