The Title Page of the First Edition of Martyrs Mirror
by Thieleman J. van Braght, 1660
This early Anabaptist document contains the story of the witness of 803 Anabaptist martyrs. Christ is portrayed as the witnessing cross-bearer together with Christians who followed Him in martyrdom from apostolic days to the publication of Martyrs Mirror. Originally printed in Dutch, the Martyrs Mirror was translated into German and English. The first American edition was printed at the Ephrata Cloisters at Ephrata, Pennsylvania, in 1748-49. Martyrs Mirror has been a possession in Mennonite homes in many lands and over many generations.
