AFRICAN-AMERICAN MENNONITE ASSOCIATION

Rev. James Offutt, Peoria, Illinois, transferring the official records of the African-American Mennonite Association (AAMA) to the Archives at Goshen, Indiana, July 27, 2001. Offutt served as the Executive Director for AAMA in the early 1990s. "It is exciting to be a part of a local church that is committed to evangelical, Christian, Biblical, New Testament and wholistic ministry". And "When will the [USA] nation learn to sing the anthem of the anti-war movement toward us [Black people in America] in this
war - 'Gonna lay down my sword and shield, down by the riverside... gonna study war no mo'" (Quoted from The Traveler, ca. 1991)

Records, 1969, 1976-1990's
36 Boxes (1 Green, 1 Gray, 4 Large, 16 two foot, 8 eighteen inch, 4 three cubic feet)

Introduction

The first two boxes of papers were deposited into the Archives by the Afro-American Mennonite Association in 1982 and 1987. The next 34 boxes were deposited by James C. Offutt, Canton, Illinois, in 2001.

This organization began in the form of an Urban-Racial Council in 1969. Later a separate Black Council was formed, around 1976-82. Two Black Caucus Assemblies were also held, one in 1980 and another in 1982.

In 1983 the name was changed to the Afro-American Mennonite Association, and later to the African-American Mennonite Association. This association had an Executive Committee and held annual assemblies for all participating congregations. Office support for this association came originally from the Mennonite Church General Board, under the Office of Black Concerns.
