Historical
Information and Mission
Statement
The Mennonite Camping Association
was founded in 1960. It is a voluntary
fellowship
of camps, retreat centers, camp associations, and individuals within
the
Anabaptist tradition whose purpose is to provide a clearinghouse for
directing
and promoting Christian camping among Mennonite conferences and
congregations
throughout Canada
and the United
States of America.

brochure, 1992; Mennonite Yearbook and
Directory, 1996.
In 1984, the history of Mennonite
camping was written by Jess Kauffman, in a book entitled A
Vision and A Legacy: The Story of Mennonite Camping, 1920-80. (Newton, Kansas: Faith and Life Press, 1984). In 2006, an updated history was published,
entitled In Harmony with Creation:
Seeking God's Face in Mennonite Camping, 1980-2005. (Elkhart, Indiana:
Mennonite Camping Association, 2006). It
was edited by Larry and Mary Jane Breneman Eby.
Administrative
Information
The records of the Mennonite Camping
Association were deposited into the Archives by the President,
Secretary,
Treasurer and/or Executive Director at several times between 1962 and
1997. These persons included John R.
Smucker in 1971, Harold D. Lehman and Eldina (Miller) Nussbaum in 1978,
Virgil
Brenneman in 1979, J. J. Hostetler in 1981, and Mary Lou Farmer in
1986.
A
bulk of records, including the historical research of the camping
association,
were deposited by Jess Kauffman in 1985.
This also included the photographs and
tapes. Mary Jane Eby, President, and
Howard E.
Krehbiel, Bluffton College, transferred the 1975-1996 to the Archives
in 1997
(Series #9). The archives continued to
receive materials from the association, 1997-2008, which were placed
into
Series #9.
The materials have been organized
chronologically, divided roughly around the terms of the various
presidents
and/or executive directors of the Association.
An inventory was prepared by Rachel M.
Yoder in 1979 after the deposit
of the Virgil Brenneman materials (Sections #1-5).
It was updated in 1983 by Bryan L.
Kehr (Section
#6), and by Marilyn Voran (Section #7) and by Julie E. Reimer in 1986
with the
deposit of the Jess Kauffman materials (Section #8).
Inventories of the photographs and
tapes were
also completed by Julie E. Reimer in 1986.
In 1997, the Historical Sketch,
Series and Box Listing and Administrative Information was added by Dennis Stoesz.
The hard copy inventory was typed into
the computer by Nelda Nussbaum in
2000, and posted on the web. In 2003 Cathy Hochstetler added the incoming
materials,
1997-2003, into Section #9, and in 2007 updated the inventory listing. In 2008 the entire section #9 was organized
by Phil and Anita Lindberg
at the
initiative of MCA President Ken Bontrager, as supervised by Dennis Stoesz, Archivist.
