 Administrative Information

The IVS Archival Collection was begun at the Archives of the Mennonite Church in 1997, with the deposit of several series of records.  The initial contact was made by Professor Perry Bush, Bluffton College, with Anne Shirk, IVS, in 1996, when Bush was doing research into IVS’s history.  The photographs were deposited  by Parker Halberg, Executive Director of International Voluntary Services. The program files of Bolivia and Ecuador, and some more audiovisual materials were deposited by Anne Shirk, Program Development Director of IVS.  The minutes and reports of IVS, as collected by Secretary William T. Snyder, were transferred from the Mennonite Central Committee Collection (found at the Archives) into the newly begun IVS Collection.

In 1998, IVS worker Roderick MacRae, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, were deposited the records he had collected over the years, from his work in Laos, 1963-66, in Washington, 1966-68, and as one who continued to be interested and involved in IVS. And in 2001, Robert Knoernschild deposited his materials from Vietnam, 1955-66.

Note that Mennonite Central Committee kept in touch with IVS from 1954-1974, and that this working relationship is reflected in the MCC correspondence files (IX-6-3) through this time period.  Some IVS correspondence and reports, 1957-60, are also found among the personal papers of William T. Snyder (Hist. Mss. 1-709, Box 1, Files 36-39).

Two good secondary sources on IVS are: The IVS Experience: From Algeria to Viet Nam, edited by Stuart Rawlings (IVS, Washington, D.C., 1992), 178 pages; The Vietnam Story of International Voluntary Services, Inc., 1956-1972, by Winburn T. Thomas, (Washington, D.C., June 30, 1972), 294 pages.  Both are available from the Mennonite Historical Library, Goshen College.
