Introduction

            The records of the Mission Committee were catalogued in 1972.  The early applications from Missionary Candidates, 1904-1917, were added to these materials after 1972.  The later applications, 1918-1950, were added in 1992.

            Secretaries included A. D. Wenger, J. S. Shoemaker, J. S. Hartzler and I. R. Detweiler.  Other members of the committee included D. J. Johns, S. G. Shetler, M. S. Steiner, C. Z. Yoder, Daniel Kauffman, S. E. Allgyer, D. H. Bender, D. D. Miller, S. S. Yoder, and D. S. Yoder.  Meetings were held in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

            Written by J. S. Hartzler, Goshen, Indiana, secretary of the Mission Committee, from 1914-1918.  Missing issues #16, 17, 24, and 41.

Mission Letter, 1918-1924, (No. 49-122)

            Letter is been written by several persons, but mostly by Jacob K. Bixler and S. E. Allgyer, who served as secretaries of the Mission Committee.  Some issues missing, #52, 54, 56, 57, 78-81, 94, 95, 102, 103, 108, 115, 116, and 119.

Weekly Bulletin / Weekly Mission News, 1921-1925

            A half newsheet which began to be put out by the Mission Board itself.  Was distributed by V. E. Reiff, Treasurer - see his letter of August 15, 1921.  Most sheets have Vol. and Issue No: Vol. 2, No. 1 (June 2, 1921) - Vol. 6, No. 1. (January 25, 1925), although the first several do not, April 13 - May 26, 1921.

            Put out by Mennonite Board of Missions, Elkhart, Indaina.  Vol. 1, No. 1 (January 21, 1925) - Vol. 8, No. 24 (December 20, 1933).  And one special bulletin, issued May 29, 1934.

1.3  Applications from Missionary Candidates, 1918-1950

            These files were found at the Archives, in among some unaccessioned MBM Personnel Files, in 1992.  These files includes applications from persons who wanted to serve the Mennonite Church as missionaries.  The files include application forms, medical reports from a physician, a Doctrinal Examination of the Missionary Candidate, and a "Report of Missionary Candidate."  They date from the period, 1918-1950.  Some of the applications are marked “cancelled personnel.”

             Members of the Mission Committee who examined candidates included J. S. Hartzler, S. E. Allgyer, S. C. Yoder, and J. D. Graber.  Other members of the Mission Committee, who signed their okay on the Doctrinal Examination included Chester K. Lehman, Harry A. Diener, Milo Kauffman, J. N. Kaufman, and Daniel Kauffman.  This examination included accepted 18 Articles of Faith by the General Conference.
