Mennonite Board of Missions

Health and Welfare, Kenneth Schmidt, Director

Data Files, 1908-36, 1948-91

12 Boxes (1 Green, 11 Large)

2 Oversize Files (Map Case)

INTRODUCTION
These records focus on various hospitals, nursing homes, children's homes, etc. for the years 1979-89, when Kenneth H. Schmidt was the director.  In 1989, the Health and Welfare department of the Mennonite Board of Missions (MBM) officially closed, and transferred their ongoing administrative responsibilities to Mennonite Health Services, Akron, Pennsylvania.  Since the department was closed, these files also contain earlier materials, as well as some field records.  Schmidt continued as interim director of the MBM-related Health and Welfare programs until 1991.  It was during this period, 1989-91, that Schmidt worked through the files, and transferred them to the archives.
The Health and Welfare Committee goes back to 1958, and was probably the successor of the Child Welfare Committee (1950s) and the Hospital Planning Committee (1948-49).  E.C. Bender served as Secretary Staff person from 1961-66, and Allen H. Erb served as an assistant the first two years, 1961-62.  Luke Birky served from 1967-79, and then Kenneth H. Schmidt from 1979-89.
