Introduction
 
            The early records of this home, 1897-1919, were deposited into the Archives by Sem Sutter (son of Clayton and Elsie Sutter), Rittman, Ohio, in 1963, and by Elsie Sutter, Goshen, Indiana, in 1974. Clayton and Elsie Sutter were directors of this home from 1961-63.  The later records of the home, 1939-1979, were deposited by Mennonite Board of Missions, Elkhart, Indiana, in 1983.

Historical Sketches

Mennonite Old People's Home, Rittman, Ohio, 1897-1974
 
1897    David C. and Fanny Amstutz bequeath their 160 acre farm and home to the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board (later Mennonite Board of Missions) for the purpose of developing an old people's home.  D.C. was a bishop in the Crown Hill Mennonite Church.
1899    Plans begin for a home for old people, the first on of its kind for Mennonites.
1901    The first building was dedicated with capacity of 34 beds.  It was built right next to the Crown Hill Mennonite Church, and always had a connection with the church.
1901    First superintendent was D. S. Amstutz, brother of D. C. Amstutz,  followed by J. S. Wenger.
1904    J. D. Mininger and his wife, Hettie, assumed responsibilities of the home and served until 1909.
1909    W. H. Miller and his wife in charge until 1910, followed by J. K. Hooley and his wife who served until 1913.
1913    D. F. Hartzler, J. F. Brunk and wife, P. R. Lantz and Joseph M. Niceley served as superintendent, in that order, until 1919.
1919    Fire completely destroyed the building.
1937    Plans began for a new building.
 
1939    First resident moved in, Aaron Peachy was administrator. Served until 1961.
1961    Clayton and Elsie Sutter came to serve as Superintendent and Director of Patient Services.
1963    Richard Brenneman and Arlene Shoup replaced the Sutters.
1966    Area Mennonite women organized the Rittman Mennonite Home Auxiliary to provide additional needed services.
1970    Emma Ruth Van Pelt , a licensed administrator, takes over for Brenneman.
1972    John Junior Miller became "Administrator in Training", Brenneman returns to serve as licensed administrator on a part-time basis.
1974    Closed because of a new Nursing Home, Brenn-Field, being built near Orrville, Ohio, and because of new restrictions in making the Rittman Home up to code. It became efficiency apartments by Crown Hill Mennonite Church, but taken over by an independent Board.
 

Mennonite Orphanage, Weilersville, Ohio, 1896-1901
 
1896    David Garber and his father-in-law Solomon K. Plank opened up an orphanage on their farm near Weilersville, Ohio.
1901    Orphanage moved to West Liberty, Ohio, and today is known as Adriel School
