Photograph Project
These 1971-95 photographs, and 1980-95 negatives,
are now available for use. The photographs consist of 230 files which
are arranged alphabetically by the name of countries and states (USA).
The photographs reflecting the work of the Mission Board itself and its
departments, are found under the section of "MBM". For example, "MBM
Board, Corporate, 1980's".
There are also a set of negatives available for the
photographs, 1980-95. They are found in Boxes 17-19, and one can
retrieve the negative by looking for a negative # on the back of the
photograph.
This project was undertaken in spring 2001 in order
for the Mennonite Board of Missions to work on their historical time
line for the Web. The board also wanted to write two special historical
issue of Missions Now before the change into Mennonite Mission Network
on February 1, 2002.
This photograph project was completed by Tim Voliva,
a history major student at Goshen College, for his internship at the
Mission Board. The biggest task was to sort these files alphabetically,
since these photographs were in several sets of A-Z files, with many in
not any sequential order at all.
Tim first listed each file title, including
beginning and end dates. He then went through the list and came up with
standard geographic and subject headings. Then original location file
numbers were added to each file (and at the end of each file title on
the computer). This allowed him to sort these 230 files alphabetically
on the computer, and then physically put the files in order. This was
possible by using the Sort function on Word 6.0. Final location numbers
were then added to the beginning of each file to allow for easier
retrieval and re-filing of photographs. This same approach was used for
sorting the 1900-1970 section consisting of 668 photograph files. The
project lasted over three months, from January to May 2001.

Hoffman, Coordinator of Office Services and Archiving, and Dennis
Stoesz, Archivist of the Archives of the Mennonite Church.
