Historical Sketch
The records in this collection date back to 1895
with the beginning of the Elkhart Institute in Elkhart, Indiana.
By 1903 this Institute had moved to Goshen, Indiana, and had been
renamed Goshen College. And by 1905 a Mennonite Board of
Education was formed by Mennonite conferences to assume ownership and
operation of the college.
By 1909 Hesston Academy and Bible School, at
Hesston, Kansas, was established and came under the operation of the
Board. It was later renamed Hesston College. And by 1917
the Eastern Mennonite School had been established by the Virginia
Mennonite Conference. It was renamed Eastern Mennonite College in
1947, and Eastern Mennonite University in 1994. It had come under
the leadership of the Board in 1984. In 1949 this Board also
assumed responsibility for the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing
(begun in 1915). It closed its doors in 1958.
In 1949 a Secondary School Council was formed to
coordinate the work of the Mennonite private high schools. In
1960 it was renamed the Mennonite Secondary Education Council.
And in 1962 an Association of Mennonite Elementary Schools was formed
(later Mennonite Elementary Education Council, 1976) for the many
Mennonite private elementary schools in existence. In 1964,
Conrad Grebel College, Waterloo, Ontario, was begun which was supported
by the Board, and sponsored by the Mennonite Conference of Eastern
Canada.
In 1968, a High-Aim program was begun by the Board to make private high
school education more accessible to minority groups within the
church. In 1978, together with the Hispanic Convention, the Board
began an Hispanic Ministries program at Goshen College. And in
1986-88, the Board developed a Theological and Pastoral Education
Council to develop leadership training programs for pastors.
In 2002, with the merger of two church conferences
(Mennonite Church, 1898-2002, and General Conference Mennonite Church,
1860-2002), a new Mennonite Education Agency was formed to provide
leadership in education to the church. With this then came two
other colleges which had traditional connections with the General
Conference church: Bethel College, Newton, Kansas; and Bluffton
College, Bluffton, Ohio.

Display, 1975,
"Can the Mennonite Church Survive Without a Unique Type of
Education?" August 8, 1975, by Richard L. Kremer (1 Gray
Box, 1 Oversize)
This display was transferred to the Archives by Joe Springer, Mennonite
Historical Library, Goshen College, in 1991. It was found in the
basement of the Good Library.
The display was probably produced to be set up at the Mennonite Church
General Assembly, held at Eureka, Illinois, August 5-10, 1975.
Display is called MBE "TAC" Display, and included three main lettered
panels, with 10 lighted up color transparencies showing students and
faculty in various school settings, with a continuos cycling cassette
tape, which sequentially lighted up the transparencies in conjunction
with the narration on the theme of the unique education of the
Mennonite Church. Narration probably by Kremer. The display
has been dismantled, and is now incomplete.
Box 39 (Gray)
Manual, 9 pages
Narration on Cassette tape, (#1, #4)
Introduces the Mennonite Church and education, and
distinctive aspects of this education. Several Mennonite schools
have been started over the past 100 years: 9 High Schools, 3 Colleges,
and 2 Seminaries. Narration is about 2-3 minutes, and was
probably done by Kremer. Includes two "Endless Cassette Tapes".
Transparencies, 10, showing students and a few faculty, in various
school settings.
Box 40
(Oversize)
Control box, with #1, 2, 6 and 7 of the Light Panels connected to it.
Manual explains the electrical diagram of this
box. Box was especially built and constructed by Richard Kremer
and Dan Shenk.
