Marvin Benjamin Jess, 22, of rural Arthur passed away at 11:15 p.m. Monday,
May 11, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Nelson Jess residence in rural Arthur with Bishop Omer Otto officiating. Burial was in Yoder Cemetery in rural Arthur. Visitation was any time prior to the funeral at the residence. Edwards Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Jess was born January 12, 1987, in Tuscola. He was a son of Omer E. and Susanna Marie (Gingerich) Jess.

He is survived by his parents, Omer and Susanna Jess of Arthur; 15 siblings, Richard Jess and wife Loretta of Ava, Amanda Miller and husband Marcus of Arcola, Dorothy Herschberger and husband Howard of Arcola, and Dwayne Jess, Leroy Jess, Nelson Jess and wife Erma, David Jess and wife JoEllen, Leona Jess, Clarence Jess, Raymond Jess, Esther Jess, Joseph Jess, Wilma Jess, Vernon Jess, and Merlin Jess, all of Arthur; his paternal grandmother, Sovilla Jess, and maternal grandmother, Sovilla Gingerich, both of Arthur; 7 nieces; 11 nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ervin Jess and Ben Gingerich, and three nephews, Timothy Miller and Lamar and Lavern Herschberger.

He was employed by Prairieland Construction LLC.

GOSHEN -- Edith M. Johns, 85, of 1801 Greencroft Blvd., died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 5, 2009) in her home.

She was born May 1, 1923, in Goshen to John Maynard and Mandella (Bachtel) Hoover. On May 16, 1943, she married Galen Johns at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church.

He survives along with one daughter-in-law, Jeanette Johns of Sheridan, Mich.; four children, Steven (Debra) Johns of Goshen, Lois (Jim) Kaufmann of New Paris, Loren (Rachel) Johns of Goshen and Lindale (Melanie) Johns of Benton; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Lowell (Velorous) Hoover, Miriam (Vernon) Bontreger, Arlene Hershberger and Lucile (Menno) Chupp, all of Goshen; two half siblings, Ruth (Dale Patten) Hoover of New Paris and John M. Hoover of Glen Flora, Wis.; and one sister-in-law, Edna Hoover of Goshen.

She was preceded in death by one son, Joe Alan Johns; one daughter, Rachel Nanlee; two brothers, Norman Richard and Donald Hoover; and her stepmother, Hilde Hoover.

Mrs. Johns was a pastor's wife and a professional quilter who lived locally except for six years in Ontario, Canada. She was a member of Benton Mennonite Church and Goshen Aphasia Support Group, and was involved with many church quilting circles in the area.

Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, 1911 S. Main St., Goshen, and one hour prior to Sunday's 2:30 p.m. funeral service at Benton Mennonite Church. Pastors Brenda Meyer and Doug Kaufman will officiate. Burial will be in Benton Lutheran Cemetery.

Johns, Edith Mae Hoover, 85, of Goshen IN died February 5, 2008 at Goshen from heart failure.

She was born May 1, 1923 at Goshen, Elkhart Co., Indiana to John Maynard and Mandella (Bachtel) Hoover. John Maynard was born July 16, 1900 and died October 18, 1966. Mandella was born September 21, 1900 and died October 10, 1948.

On May 16, 1943 at Goshen she was married to Galen Ira Johns, who was born February 26, 1920 and survives.

Surviving are Jeanette Johns (widowed daughter-in-law), Steven (Debra) Johns, Lois (Jim) Kaufmann, Loren (Rachel) Johns, Lindale (Melanie) Johns, 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and siblings: Lowell (Velorous) Hoover; Miriam (Vernon) Bontrager; Arlene Hershberger; Lucile (Menno) Chupp; Edna Hoover (widowed sister-in-law); Ruth (Dale Patten) Hoover (half-sister); and John Maynard Hoover (half-brother).

Kandel, Clayton Mast, 88, of Berlin, OH died January 8, 2009 at Canton, Stark Co., OH from a heart attack. He was born October 5, 1920 at Millersburg, Holmes Co., OH to Joseph E. and Lydia (Mast) Kandel. On August 14, 1943 he was married to Doris Miller, who died January 25, 1990.

Surviving are children, Ethel (Andy) Miller of Walnut Creek, OH; Shirley Kandel of Berlin, OH; Kenneth (Rosalie) Kandel of Sugarcreek, OH; Keith (Margaret) Kandel of Lisbon, OH; Marlene (Tom) Swartzendruber of Shickley, Nebraska; Karla Kandel of Massillon, OH; Julie (Mark) Kandel of Walnut Creek, OH; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Forrest (Mary Ann) Kandel; and Clifford (Joan) Kandel; both of Millersburg, sisters, Mary Troyer of Millersburg, OH and Ethel (Clarence) Miller of Orrville, OH; and a sister-in-law, Mary (Eli) Kandel of Berlin, OH.

An infant son, Roger Kandel, a brother, Robert Kandel, and a sister, Fern Miller
preceded him in death.

Kauffman, Fannie Irene Herschberger, 75, of Middlebury, Elkhart Co., IN died February 22, 2008 at Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN.

She was born May 5, 1933 at Middlebury to Eli A. and Alma (Miller) Herschberger. Eli was born March 25, 1903 and died July 3, 1991.

On March 1, 1953 at White Pigeon, MI she was married to Harvey Kauffman, who was born March 12, 1933 and survives.

Surviving are children, Rick (Ruth) Kauffman, Gayle (Ron) Kohlmeyer, Darwin (Susie) Kauffman, Sonja (Mark) Neal, 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, siblings, Ida Mae (Dan) Lehman, Lovina (Mel) Miller, Pauline (Erie) Schrock, Mary Alice Yoder, Omer (Louella) Herschberger, Perry (Annabelle) Herschberger, and her stepmother, Lydia Herschberger.

A son, Michael Kauffman and two grandsons, Matthew and Malachi Kauffman preceded her in death.

Fannie was a homemaker and a member of First Mennonite Church, Middlebury.

Memorial services were held February 28, 2009 at First Mennonite Church, Middlebury, IN with burial in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury, IN.

Kauffman, Marilyn Jean Steiner, 81, of Marshallville, Ohio died February 3, 2009 at Marshallville, Ohio. She was born June 29, 1927 at Dalton, Ohio to Frank and Edith (Gregory) Steiner. On August 27, 1950 at Orrville, Ohio she was married to John S. Kauffman.

Surviving are children, Stan Kauffman, David (Willow) Kauffman, Roland (Jan) Kauffman, Barry (Lynne) Kauffman, Jeff (Carol) Kauffman, 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a brother, Don (Norma) Steiner, and a sister, Janet (Lowell) Oswald.

A brother, Richard Steiner, and two sisters, Dorothy Hershberger and Marjorie Hackett preceded her in death.

GOSHEN -- Menno A. Kauffman, 81, of 1208 Greencroft Drive, died at 2:20 a.m. Sunday (July 5, 2009) in Greencroft Gables.

He was born Nov. 29, 1927, in Kenmare, N.D., to Alpha and Alma (Nusbaum) Kauffman. On Feb. 12, 1949, in Goshen, he married Mabel M. Yoder.

She survives, along with three sons, Robert L. (Donna) Kauffman of Harrisonville, Pa., Larry L. (Lavina) Kauffman of Hayward, Wis., and Richard L. (Stella) Kauffman of New Paris; three daughters, Shirley A. Kauffman and Cheryl A. (Ernest) Shaver, both of Phoenix, and Carol A. (Glen) Ramer of New Paris; 23
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold (Darlene) Kauffman of Conrath, Wis.; and one sister, Esther Bontrager of Goshen.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ezra, Mark, Andrew and Chancey Kauffman; and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Kauffman was self-employed. He owned M&M Wood Shavings and Menno Kauffman Trucking. He also raised poultry for Pine Manor.

A member of Salem Mennonite Church, where he was a former deacon, he was a 1944 graduate of Hesston Academy.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, all at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, 1911 S. Main St., Goshen, and one
hour prior to a 10:30 a.m. Thursday funeral service at Salem Mennonite Church, C.R. 46, New Paris. Burial will be at the church.

Kauffman, Roy I., 98, of Princeton, Bureau Co., IL died September 12, 2009 at the same place. He was born March 6, 1911 at Hopedale, Tazewell Co., IL to Noah Daniel and Katherine (Egli) Kauffman. On February 2, 1991 at Tiskilwa, Bureau Co., IL he was married to Helen Nafziger, who survives.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Kauffman Cater, a son, George (Connie) Kauffman,
12 stepchildren, 8 grandchildren, 26 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Dan (Elaine) Kauffman; and Walt (Norma) Kauffman; and two sisters, Grace Nachtigall, and Edith Piper.

His first wife, whom he married on June 1, 1941, Eunice Albrecht died on Jan. 21,1989. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Marion Jones, Rose Mason, and Gertrude Powell and a grandson, Paul Cater.

Kauffmann, Angela Mae, 25, of Las Vegas, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep, Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009. Born Nov. 5, 1983, in Las Vegas, she was a lifelong resident. She was a data processing clerk. Angela was a loving single mother. She enjoyed a good book, listening to her music collection, the laughter of children, saving lost animals and being a good friend to the many people who knew her and loved her. Angela is survived by her two-and-a-half-year-old son, Landon Kauffmann; parents, John and Suzi Kauffmann; and stepsister, Lora Berry. There will be a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive. An inurnment service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Palm Memorial Park - Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Donations can be made to the Landon Bradley Kauffmann Trust Fund.

Melvin Kaufman, 71, of Sarasota, formerly of Arthur, Ill., died Nov. 16, 2009.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fellowship of Believers Church. Burial will follow.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Martha; sons Roger of Sarasota and Gene of Arthur; daughters Cheryl of Greenville, S.C., and Rhonda Pike of Sarasota; a brother, Harvey of El Salvador; sisters Anna Miller of Arthur, Sovilla Jess of Arthur and Fannie Herschberger of Bloomfield, Iowa; and seven grandchildren.
He loved his church and his Tuesday morning prayer group.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters.

Keener, Esther E. Good, 91, of Lancaster, PA formerly of Middletown and Dry Run, PA, died March 7, 2009 at the Mennonite Home. She was born in Bainbridge, PA to Martin and Anna Martin Good. She was the wife of the late Samuel L. Keener who died in 1986.

A member of Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. She previously held memberships at Shady Pine Mennonite Church, Willow Hill, PA and Stricklers Mennonite Church, Middletown, PA.

Keener, George Showalter, 69, of Chambersburg, PA died January 16, 2009 at Menno Haven Retirement Community, Chambersburg, PA. He was born February 24, 1939 in Hagerstown, MD to George M. and Esther Showalter Keener. He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Martin Keener, whom he married November 12, 1960.

He was a member of Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, Greencastle, PA.

Surrived by his wife and five children, Darwin H. Keener of Lancaster, PA; Diane Lehman and husband Dale of Chambersburg, PA; Denise Herr and husband Bryan of Quarryville, PA; G. David Keener and wife Joylynn of East Petersburg, PA and Dorinda Henesy and husband Greg of Hagerstown, Md; and thirteen grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Keener, and one grandchild.

Funeral service was January 19, 2009 at Salem Ridge Mennonite Church. Rev. Roger I. Martin will officiate. Interment will follow in the Salem Ridge Mennonite Cemetery, Greencastle, PA.

Keeport, Bertha Harnish Sauder, 98, of the Mennonite Home, Lancaster, PA. died May 30, 2009. She was born October 30, 1910 in Manor Twp., Lancaster Co., PA to Martin Graver and Ida Maude (Harnish) Sauder. She was married for 64 years to John Emory Keeport, who passed away on May 8, 1997. Bertha was a member of Millersville Mennonite Church, Millersville, PA.

Survivied by two daughters: Anna Mary Shultz and Betty J., wife of Raymond Gerhart all of Lancaster, PA; a son-in-law: Glenn R. Kreider of Holtwood, PA; a sister: Verna I. Keeport of Lancaster, PA; a brother-in-law: Abram M. Shenk of Lititz, PA; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter: Nora Mae Kreider, a son-in-law: Robert B. Shultz; and by siblings Nora M. Sauder, Amos H. Sauder, Grace I. Zink, and Agnes H. Shenk.

Funeral service was June 3, 2009 at Millersville Mennonite Church, with Rev. Delbert Kautz and Chaplain Dorcas Martzall officiating. Interment was in the Millerville Mennonite Cemetery, Millersville, PA.

Kemp, Carolina, 71, died Saturday, July 11, 2009. She was born near Kalona in Johnson Co., IA. to Benedick S. and Katie Ann Yoder Kemp. She attended Kalona Mennonite Church.

Survivied by her siblings and spouses; Samuel Kemp of Kalona, IA; Elmer Kemp of Arthur, IL; Alta (Elmer G.) Kennel, Mae Etta Hershberger, 81, of Albany, Linn Co., OR died April 10, 2009 at the same place from cancer. She was born February 22, 1928 at Milford, NE to Allen and Katie (Beckler) Hershberger. On June 18, 1947 at Albany, OR she was married to Willard Peter Kennel, who was born April 1, 1926 and survives.

Surviving are son, Russel & Maribeth Kennel of Salem; daughter, Rachel & Wayne Hickman of Maryville, TN; daughter, Julia & Wayne Miller of Salem, OR; daughter, Janine & Barry Rands of San Luis Obispo, CA; Lori & Francis Jamison of Philadelphia, PA; sisters, Verle Vogt of Hesston, KS; Edith Roth of Nampa, ID; Clara Miller of Albany, OR; Wilma Kennel of Molalla, OR; brothers, Del Hershberger of Sun City, AZ; Ivan Hershberger of Vale; ten living grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One grandchild preceded her in death.

Mae Etta (Hershberger) Kennel, age 81 of Albany, went to be with her Lord and Savior April 10, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. Born February 22, 1928 at Milford, Nebraska, Mae was the 7th of 10 children of Allen and Katie Hershberger. After high school, Mae taught school for one year in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. During this time she met Willard Kennel, the love of her life.

In 1946, the Hershberger family sold their farm in Milford and moved to a 117 acre farm near Albany. Mae taught at Fry Station Grade School in Albany for two years. On June 18, 1947, she married Willard Kennel, formerly of Shickley, Nebraska, and they began married life on a small farm near Scio. Willard and Mae were members of Albany Mennonite Church and have remained life-long members of the Mennonite Church.

A talented musician, artist and teacher, Mae served the church for over 50 years leading music, singing, playing piano, and teaching Sunday school. She was especially known for her clear soprano voice as she led singing in church worship services and other special music over the years. Mae's yodeling presentations delighted her audiences on special occasions. She led Bible studies, helped with summer camps, led and participated in Women's ministries and other church-based volunteer projects.

In 1956, Mae and Willard moved from Albany to Siletz, Oregon to help with the newly established Logsden Mennonite Church. The last of their five children was born during that time.

From 1966 to 2006, Willard and Mae served at Western Mennonite School (WMS) outside of Salem, Oregon. In addition to administrative assistant work in the WMS office, Mae taught typing, painting, drawing and calligraphy classes until retiring in 1988. In 2006, when Willard retired, they moved to their current home at the Mennonite Village.

An avid quilter, Mae made, and helped make countless quilts for Mennonite church and WMS fundraisers over many years, including quilts she made for some of her grandchildren. Also, the walls of her home display some of her paintings.

Mae was well known for her generous hospitality, good food, love of social fun and laughter. There were guests at the dinner table nearly every Sunday. Mae had numerous friends to whom she was fiercely loyal, who in turn looked to her for guidance, comfort, and friendship. Mae loved and cared passionately for her immediate and large extended families. The spiritual welfare of her five children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was always of paramount concern.

Memorial services were held April 16, 2009 at Albany Mennonite Church, Albany Oregon. Her body was cremated. Over 370 attended the Celebration of Life.

Kennel, Ruth Elizabeth, 87, of Harrisonburg, VA, died February 9, 2009 at Oak Lea Nursing Home. She had been a member of the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community since 1991.

Ms. Kennel was born on December 22, 1921 in Chester Co, PA to Isaac and Pricilla Kauffman Kennel.

She was a lifelong member of Forest Hills Mennonite Church in Leola, PA. She served as a nurse with Mennonite Central Committee in Indonesia during the 1950's. She was an associate member of Park View Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Gladys Kennel, Lititz; one nephew; two nieces; and a foster sister. Reverend Shirlee K. Yoder.

Keyser, Carl B., 70, of Scottdale died January 8, 2009 at Scottdale, PA. He was born February 28, 1938 at Acme, PA to Edwin and Maude (Errett) Keyser. On October 19, 1963 he was married to Nancy C. Sprinkle, who survives.

Kief, Nellie C. Good, 93, of Albany, Linn County, Oregon died June 26, 2009 at the same place. She was born May 2, 1916 at Hubbard, Oregon to Daniel W. and Sarah E. (Roth) Good. On December 24, 1938 at Albany she was married to Loren H. Kief, who was born August 12, 1910 and died May 22, 1999.

Surviving are children, Judy (Kief) Bacher, Jewell (Kief) Stanley, Ron Kief, and Jim Kief, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Della Hofstetter.

She was born July 30 1910 at West Liberty to Joseph M. and Martha E. (Zook) Hartzler. On September 9, 1934 at West Liberty she was married to Loren King, who died January 15, 1998.

Surviving are children, Beverly (John) Stoltzfus, Linda (Paul) Hostetler, Mary (Claude Denslow) Boldman, David (Mary) King, Dwight (Dixie) King, and Alvin (Karen) King, 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was born January 6, 1913 at Columbiana, Ohio to John Howard and Emma (Metzler) Clark. On March 31, 1985 in Sarasota, Florida she was married to C.A. King, who died in 2001.

Her first husband was Melvin D. Schloneger, married June 3, 1931 in North Lima, Ohio. He died in 1979.

Surviving are sons, Wendell (Ana Maria) Schloneger and Will (Sue) Schloneger and daughter-in-law, Pat Schloneger; Stepchildren - Carolyn Camp, Corrine
(Dex) Sedwick, Wayne (Grace) King, and Marion (Betty) King, 12 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 13 step great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Klassen, Otto Dyck, 81, of Goshen, IN died January 31 2009 at Goshen. He was born May 10, 1927 at Bluffton, OH to John P. and Anna (Dyck) Klassen. On July 7, 1973 in Elkhart, IN he was married to Jerrie Ganger, who was born August 1, 1933 and survives. Otto was first married to Helen Bohn, Dec. 18, 1948, in Pandora, Ohio. She died March 14, 1969.

A sister, Anita Lugbill preceded him in death.

Otto was a physician and child psychiatrist. In 1959 he became the first child psychiatrist in private practice in Wichita, Kansas. Otto co-founded Oaklawn (a mental health facility in Goshen, IN) with Robert Hartzler in 1963, and was its medical director. After retiring from Oaklawn he did private practice in Middlebury and Goshen, Ind. Otto volunteered with the Heifer Project and served on the boards of Boys & Girls Cub of Goshen and Elkhart Department of County Health.

Klassen, Otto Dyck, 81, of Goshen, IN, died January 31, 2009, at Goshen General Hospital. He was born May 10, 1927 in Bluffton, OH to John P. and Anna (Dyck) Klassen. He married Helen Bohn on December 18, 1948 in Pandora, Ohio. She died March 14, 1969. He then married Jerrie Ganger on July 7, 1973 in Elkhart, IN.

Dr. Klassen was a member of College Mennonite Church, Goshen, IN.

In 1946 he volunteered with Heifer Project helping with a delivery of horses to Yugoslavia. In 1959, Dr. Klassen opened the first child psychiatrist private practice in Wichita, Kansas. In 1962 he moved to Elkhart, IN and along with Robert Hartzler founded Oaklawn Center where he served as director. After retiring from Oaklawn he had a private practice in Middlebury and Goshen, IN.

Survived by his wife, Jerrie; five daughters, Ruth Andrews of Cassopolis, MI, Frieda (Ken) McRae of Dehra Dun, India, Bess (Marv) Klassen-Landis of Windsor, VT, Michelle (Jeff) Antioho of Murels Isle, SC, and Suzy (Andrew Elliott) Klassen of Eugene, OR; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Herbert J. (Rita) Klassen of Sonoma, CA, Paul P. (Lavonne) Klassen of Bluffton, OH, and Karl H. (Betty) Klassen of Clarksdale, AZ.

Krabill, Willard Stanley, 82, of Goshen, IN died January 6, 2009 at Goshen, IN from cancer. He was born April 25, 1926 at Louisville, OH to Mahlon and Ella (Conrad) Krabill. On July 31, 1955 he was married to Grace Ellen Hershberger, who was born August 23, 1933 and survives.

Surviving are children, Merrill Krabill; Jeannie (Phil) Miller; Karen (Scot Yoder) Krabill; Ron (Nancy Chupp) Krabill; 9 grandchildren, and two sisters, Anne (Abner) Hershberger and Ina Ruth (Willis) Breckbill.

Dr. Krabill was a leading figure in health care in the Goshen area and nationally, advocating for the importance of medical ethics, innovative family practice medicine, wellness and wholistic health care, human sexuality education, and universal health care. During his long career he led efforts to allow fathers into the delivery room at Goshen General Hospital, delivered more than 2700 babies to local residents, instituted the popular course in human sexuality at Goshen College, and served on numerous boards and ethics committees.

Kriebel, Lois S. Sauder, 63, of 69 Fox Road, Palmyra, formerly of Lititz and Elizabethtown, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2009 at the ECC Retirement Village, Albright Campus, Myerstown. Born in Clay Township, she was the daughter of the late Aaron B. and Edna H. Risser Sauder. Lois was the wife of Marvin H. Kriebel, and they celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary in March of this year. A homemaker most of her life, Lois did serve at the Wilmington, Delaware Volunteer Service Unit, where she first met her husband and worked as a nurses aide. Later she was involved with foster care and volunteered at a daycare center in Annville. Lois was a member of Sharon Mennonite Fellowship, Lebanon, where she helped make quilt patches for the church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are thirteen siblings, Velma wife of Leon W. Weaver, Ephrata, Edith wife of Roy S. Kuhns on June 8, 1957, in Goshen, IN. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1973. She was a member of Clinton Frame Mennonite Church, Goshen, IN.

Kuhns, James Winfred, 84, died March 31, 2009 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community where he was a resident. He was born on March 23, 1925 in LaJunta, CO,
to Allen Winfred and Anna Inez Shupe Kuhns. On August 27, 1949, he married the former Olive Mae Clemens.

He served with the Civilian Public Service (CPS) from July 1944 until August 1946, and with the Mennonite Central Committee Relief Program in Ethiopia, 1949-1951. He was a member of Park View Mennonite Church.

Kuhns, James Winfred, 84, of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Virginia died March 31, 2009 at the same place from Idiopathic Pulmonary Interstitial Fibrisis.

He was born March 23, 1925 at LaJunta, Ortero County, Colorado to Allen Winfred and Anna Inez (Shupe) Kuhns. Allen was born November 18, 1883 and died June 24, 1977. Anna was born July 16, 1888 and died April 1, 1963.

On August 27, 1949 at Souderton, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania he was married to Olive Mae Clemens, who was born June 15, 1923 and survives.

She was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Middlefield, OH to Dan and Mary Detweiler Miller. Her husband of 58 years, Eli A. Kuhns, died in 1999.

A member of the Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship, Plain City, OH.

Survived by her children, Betty (Elton) Yitzy, Joanna (Merle) Egli, Floence (Gary) Hillyer, Marilyn Renner and Raymond (Patricia) Kuhns; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildern; and a brother, Ervin Miller. She was predeceeased by her husband, two daughters, Edna and Linda: a grandson, Rodney Yutzy; and 14 brothers and sisters.

He was born, September 24, 1916 in Denbigh, VA to Samuel H. and Martha (Horst) Kuhns. He married Edna H. (Martin) Kuhns on October 12, 1940 in Maugansville, MD. She died on December 7, 2006.

He was a member of the Mount Olive Mennonite Church, Maugansville, MD.

Surviving is his son, Samuel H. Kuhns, of Greencastle, PA. Daughter, Verda K. Martin, of Lewiston, ME. Brother, Harold Kuhns, of Harrisonburg, VA. Sister, Cora Crunkleton, of Chambersburg, PA. Ten Grandchildren, Thirty Seven Great-Grandchildren, and One Great-Great-Grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, Naomi Martin and Mary Hummer, three brothers, Ira Kuhns, Paul Kuhns and Adin Kuhns, and One Great-Granddaughter, Melinda Wenger.

Funeral services was February 26, 2009 at the Chambersburg Mennonite Church, with the Mount Olive Mennonite Church Ministry officiating. Burial was in the Chambersburg Mennonite Cemetery,Chambersburg, PA

Kuhns, S. Harvey

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - S. Harvey Kuhns, 92, a resident of Village Square, Menno Haven, and formerly of Hades Church Road, Greencastle, Pa., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1916, in Denbigh, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel H. and Martha Horst Kuhns. His wife, Edna H. Martin Kuhns, died Dec. 7, 2006. They were married Oct. 12, 1940.

He was a farmer from 1943 to 1972.

He was a member of Mount Olive Mennonite Church, Maugansville, where he assisted with Sunday school activities.

He is survived by one daughter, Verda K. Martin of Lewiston, Maine; one son, Samuel H. Kuhns of Greencastle; one brother, Harold Kuhns of Harrisonburg, Va.; one sister, Cora Crunkleton of Chambersburg; 10 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Martin and Mary Hummer; three brothers, Ira Kuhns, Paul Kuhns and Adin Kuhns; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Chambersburg Mennonite Church. Mount Olive Mennonite Church Ministry will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

NEW PARIS -- Ernest Kulp, 88, of C.R. 46, died at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 3, 2009) in his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Elkhart County to Christian and Emma Elizabeth (Blosser) Kulp. On July 25, 1943, he married Martha Ramer.

She survives along with one daughter, Rosemary (Ben) Shirk of Goshen; three sons, Stan (Kathleen) Kulp of Elkhart, Dale (Mary Ellen) Kulp of Richland Centre, Wis., and Dave (Phyllis) Kulp of New Paris; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Christian Kulp of Wakarusa and Isaac (Dorothy) Kulp of Goshen; and two sisters, Martha King of Archbold, Ohio, and Emma Martin of Nappanee.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel and Joseph Kulp; and three sisters, infant Susanna Kulp, Mary Kulp and Barbara Kilmer.

Mr. Kulp was a farmer and worked in Civilian Public Service from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Wisler Mennonite Church.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at RMYC, C.R. 44, Goshen, between C.R. 11 and C.R. 13. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Yellow Creek Frame Mennonite Church with home ministers officiating. Burial will be in Yellow Creek Frame Cemetery.

Kulp, Gladys Derstine, 88, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Oak Lea Nursing Home. She was born on February 7, 1921, in Franconia, PA to Edwin A. and Elizabeth Krupp Derstine. She was married to Floyd G. Kulp On May 13, 1939.

She was a member of Lindale Mennonite Church, Linville, VA.

Survied by her husband and two sons, James D. Kulp and wife Joan, Middletown, VA, Donald D. Kulp and wife Charlotte, Landisville, PA; one daughter, Janice Kulp Long and husband John, Fort Wayne, IN; one brother, Stuart K. Derstine, Souderton, PA; one sister, Phyllis O. Moyer, also of Souderton, PAa; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was February 20, 2009 at Lindale Mennonite Church with Pastors Peg Engle and Al Huyard officating. Burial was in the Lindale Mennonite Cemetery, Linville, VA.

Kulp, Henry Derstein, 91, of Souderton, PA died June 3, 2009 at Telford, Bucks Co., PA from a cerebrovascular accident. He was born March 3, 1918 at Hatfield, Montgomery Co., PA to John L. and Katie H. (Derstein) Kulp. On March 24, 1940 he was married to Sara Halteman, who was born November 13, 1920 and survives.

Surviving are two sons, Sam and wife Lorraine Kulp and Gerald and wife Elizabeth (BJ) Kulp, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

A son Jacob Kulp, a brother, Harold D. Kulp, and a sister, Eva D. Gotwals
preceded him in death.

Henry was ordained Deacon at Plains Mennonite Church in 1975 and served ten years.

Memorial services were held June 6, 2009 at Plains Mennonite Church, Hatfield, PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Kurtz, Louella H. Rutt

Louella H. Kurtz, 79, of Farmersville died peacefully at the Ephrata Community Hospital Saturday, July 11, 2009 with her family by her side. She had been a
resident of Fairmount Homes. She was the beloved wife of John S. Kurtz with whom she shared 60 years of marriage.

Born August 13, 1929, in Voganville, Louella was the daughter of the late Noah and Barbara (Hoover) Rutt.

Mrs. Kurtz was a loving homemaker and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and will be greatly missed. She was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church,
Weaverland Conference. She loved flowers and found great pleasure in visits with friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Barbara, wife of Richard Farneth of Lititz, Melvin, husband of Judy (Horst) of New Holland, John, husband of Doris (Weaver) of Stevens, and Linford of Farmersville; five grandchildren, Jessica Kurtz, Brandon husband of Sheila (Weaver) Kurtz, Rebecca Farneth, Jeremy Kurtz, and Jeffrey Kurtz. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin, Raymond, and Eugene Rutt.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at 9 a.m. at Fairmount Homes, Wheat Ridge Chapel, 333 Wheat Ridge Dr., Ephrata, with further services at 9:30 a.m. at the Groffdale Mennonite Church with the Bishop Curvin Z. Zimmerman officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, July 14th, from 5-8 p.m. at Fairmount Homes, Wheat Ridge Chapel. Kindly omit flowers. The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland is in charge of arrangements.
