Mennonite Central Committee
Photographs, Overseas, 1954-1970
6 Boxes (Prontos), 11 linear feet

Introduction

These photographs were deposited into the Archives by Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, Pennsylvania, in 1971.

These photographs reflect the expanding relief and development program of MCC throughout the world, from 1954 to 1970. MCC began its own Information Services department in 1954, and many of these photographs were sent to Mennonite and local newspapers around the country. For this reason, most photographs have been identified and are dated. Most negatives, however, were not kept for this time period.

An inventory of these photographs was first prepared by Wanda Aquino in 1988. In 1998, Irene Leaman, Records/Library and Archives Manager at MCC, worked through the photographs from "Algeria - Nepal". She subdivided the many photographs from each country into categories. At the same time she weeded out 50% of the photographs, both duplicates and poorer quality shots. Photo were transferred into acid-free file folders, and sleeves provided for those photographs whose identification tags were falling off.

In 1999, Zach Landis, an archives intern, worked through photographs from "Netherlands - Yugoslavia" to complete this project. He did not weed the photos. He did, however, provide some annotations to the files, to aid staff and researchers to find particular photographs, much like Aquino had done earlier.

In 2001, Irene Leaman and Brenda Burkholder from MCC, spent a week at the archives to complete the work. The bulk of the work involved adding a box and a half of 1964-70 overseas photos to this existing 1954-70 section. MCC had started filing photographs into a whole new A- Z section in 1964, and this section included both domestic and overseas photos. The 1964-70 photographs had not been culled or sorted into sub-headings with each country. After comparing the 1964-70 overseas photos with the overseas photos found in this 1954-70 section, it was felt there was so much overlap and duplication, that it was decided to combine the overseas photographs into one chronological section from 1954-70.

The decision to combine these two sections then allowed Irene and Brenda to do a final culling and filing of photographs to take place. About 30" of photographs were discarded (over 1,000 photos), and only the best photographs from each project were retained. Some photos were placed into acid-free mylar sleeves, and new acid-free file folders were used if new categories were created. The file titles, with beginning and end dates, were then entered into the computer on the inventory. The annotation of the last half of the photos, from "Netherlands to Zambia", was also retained to see if this is useful.
