Mennonite
Central Committee
Photographs,
Overseas, Refugees and Domestic, 1940-1953
9 Boxes (8 Gray, 1 Oversize File in Mapcase)
Scope and Content
The photographs reflect the work of MCC in Poland
and in France with Spanish refugees, 1940-42; relief work in London,
England, 1943-45; and work with relief and refugees in Europe after
World War II, 1945-53. The bulk of the photographs come from the
work in Austria, England, Germany, France, and Holland.
A good secondary source is In the Name of Christ: A History of Mennonite
Central Committee and Its Service, 1920-1951, by John D. Unruh,
1952. Published by Herald Press, Scottdale, Pennslyvania. A
good source on the emigration of Mennonites to Paraguay, which MCC was
involved in, is Pilgrims in
Paraguay: The Story of Mennonite Colonization in South America,
by J. Winfield Fretz, 1953. Published by Herald Press, Scottdale,
Pennsylvania.
Administrative Information
These photographs were deposited into the Archives
by Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, Pennsylvania, in 1967 and
1971. The bulk of these photographs (70%) originated from the MCC
Office in Europe, 1941-54. Another smaller set of photographs
(30%) originated from the MCC Office at Akron, Pennsylvania.
The European photographs were initially organized by
Rachel Shenk in 1984-86. These photographs were organized into
more specific file titles, integrated with the MCC Akron photos, and
placed into mylar sleeves and acid-free file folders by Irene Leaman,
Mennonite Central Committee, in 1998.
Additional early photographs of MCC's work in India
and Indonesia was deposited into the archives by Brenda Burkholder,
Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, Pennsylvania in 2006.
