IX-19-1
Mennonite Central Committee, 1920-
Europe and North Africa
Relief Work, Spain and France and Germany, 1939ff.

3 Boxes (Prontos)

 Scope and Content

These file drawers cover the early work of MCC in Southern France.  It was born as a result of the Civil War in Spain.  Refugees of that war fled to France. At the same time the advance of World War II created misery.  MCC brought material aid to relieve the situation.  Several children's homes were started.

This period of MCC's work marked a close cooperation with the American Friends Service Committee already located in France and also set the tone for future work:  Close association with the nationals, no discrimination in terms of race or creed, involvement with many organizations and individuals, personal contact and a flexible attitude.

The material in IX-19-1 deals indirectly with the Spanish war through the correspondence of the workers in Southern France.  Some of the persons who worked directly with the Spanish refugees, especially in homes or "colonies" for the children were Ernest Bennett and Edna Ramseyer.

This material is not in Spanish, although there are many files of correspondence in French.
