Introduction and Report
by Dennis Stoesz
November 4, 1998

The Archives has collected records from churches which belong to the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference (1854) since the archives was founded in 1937. One major emphasis has been to collect church bulletins from each church since bulletins began to be used on a regular basis in 1948. These bulletins form the largest quantitative part of each church's collection. Since the 1950s, churches have produced many more types of records, like newsletters, church directories, annual reports, etc. And these too have been deposited into the Archives by some congregations.

Older church records have also been collected and added to the appropriate collection through-out these years. The oldest records date back to 1872 which includes the Trustee book of Prairie Street and the Church Deeds of Olive Mennonite. Mostly records date from the 1890s to the present. It is noteworthy that not many records exist for this 1840s-1880s time period. The oldest churches in Indiana that were started then include Yellow Creek (1845), Olive (1850), Holdeman (1851), Clinton Brick, Clinton Frame and Maple Grove (1854), Forks (1857), Leo (1861), Shore (1865), Pleasant Valley (1867), Prairie Street (1871), Townline (1876). In Michigan, the older churches include Maple River (1879) and Pigeon (1894).

With the closer proximity of some churches to Goshen, Indiana, the archives have some fairly extensive collections. College Mennonite (1903) has largest collection, while other sizeable collections include Forks, Holdeman, Prairie Street and Yellow Creek.

The position of Conference Historian has existed in the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference since the 1950s. J. C. Wenger was the Historian in the 1950s and 1960s, others have included Lloyd Conrad, Russell Krabill and currently since the mid-1990s, Dan Hochstetler of Goshen, Indiana.

The impression left in doing this summary of churches and their church records is that there has been quite a bit of flux and change since 1961, when J. C. Wenger wrote the History of Mennonites in Indiana and Michigan. There are many new congregations not listed in the book, and also congregations which have closed or pulled out of the conference.

The summary of congregational records below provides a good indication of materials found in each church's collection. Please note, however, that the summary is not complete since titles of specific files (inventories) have not yet been completed for every church. The list also reflects only paper records, since time did not permit to check the photographs, tapes or artifacts, which are often cataloged as separate archival units. I should also note that other relevant background materials for specific churches may exist as part of other collections in the Archives. For example, in a pastor's collection, or in the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference collection. This list also does not indicate archival records which are found with the individual congregations.

This list of congregations and their church records was produced to evaluate the effectiveness of managing, collecting and preserving congregational records by the Archives, the Historical Committees and the individual churches.

Based on this listing, I would like to report the following:
