INTRODUCTION

We are pleased to make a joint report of the rich church collections found in three archives. Church records have been collected since the 1930's, but this is the first time such a listing has been undertaken. We hope Historical Committees and congregations can now see what resources are available to them on the history and faith of the Mennonite church in this "Great Lakes" region from the early 1800's up through 1998.

Two other goals of this project are a) to encourage congregations to work with their historical records, and b) for the three archives to work together in establishing guidelines for the ongoing deposit of church records. Many churches have already collected records and designated a certain file, cabinet or room at the church for their Historical Records. We would encourage churches to make a list of these records and send this report to the respective Historical Committee and archives. This joint list will also help the archives establish guidelines into which archives congregations are to deposit their records, as the four conferences move toward one merged conference.

The Illinois Mennonite Archives at Metamora, Illinois, began in 1980 as a repository for archival materials collected by the Illinois Mennonite Historical and Genealogical Society (1969). In this capacity it has collected records of various congregations found in Illinois. (Box 819, Metamora, Illinois, 61548; 309-367-2551)

The Archives of the Mennonite Church at Goshen, Indiana, was founded in 1937 and has served as a central repository for the Mennonite Church (MC) (1898), which consisted of 17 regional conferences (1997). In this role, it has collected records of churches of the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference, the Ohio Mennonite Conference and the Illinois Mennonite Conference. In 1992, the Metamora Archives was designated as the main repository for congregations of the Illinois Mennonite Conference. (1700 S. Main St., Goshen, Indiana 46526; 219-535-7477; <www.goshen.edu/mcarchives>)

The Bluffton College Archives, Ohio, began as part of the Mennonite Historical Library at the College during the 1930's. This Archives is the repository for congregations belonging to the Central District Conference of the General Conference Mennonite Church (GC) (1860). (280 W. College Ave., Bluffton, Ohio 45817; 419-358-3286)
